A leaf blower that will not start usually has a power, fuel, control, or blockage problem—not a failed motor. Unplug corded models and remove the battery or disconnect the spark-plug wire on gas models before inspecting anything. Then work through the checks below, starting with the easiest causes.

1. Check the power source

Battery leaf blowers

  • Confirm the battery is fully charged and installed until it locks into place.
  • Try the battery in its charger. A charger that shows an error, stays inactive, or cannot recognize the battery may indicate a battery or charger problem.
  • Inspect the battery contacts for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or damage. Clean only as directed by the manufacturer.
  • If you have a compatible spare battery, try it. If the blower works with the spare, the original battery may need replacement.
  • Let a battery that is unusually hot or cold return to room temperature before charging or using it. Follow the battery maker’s temperature and storage instructions.

Do not use a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, or hot for no apparent reason. Set it aside safely and follow the manufacturer’s disposal or service guidance.

Corded leaf blowers

  • Make sure the power cord is fully inserted into the blower and the outlet.
  • Test the outlet with another appliance, if safe to do so.
  • Check the extension cord for cuts, crushed sections, loose connections, or an unsuitable rating. Use the cord type and length recommended in the owner’s manual.
  • Reset a tripped GFCI outlet or circuit breaker once. If it trips again, stop using the blower and have the circuit or tool checked.
  • Do not bypass a damaged plug, switch, or safety device.

Gas leaf blowers

  • Confirm the fuel tank contains the correct fuel mixture or gasoline specified by the manufacturer.
  • Old, contaminated, or incorrectly mixed fuel can prevent starting. Drain and replace it only according to the manual.
  • Check that the fuel shutoff, if fitted, is in the run or open position.
  • Move the choke and primer to the starting positions specified for a cold or warm engine.

Work outdoors, away from flames and ignition sources, when handling gasoline. Never refuel a hot engine.

2. Verify the start controls and safety switches

A leaf blower may appear dead if a trigger lock, stop switch, battery release, or tube interlock is not in the correct position.

  • Set the power switch to the on or run position.
  • Hold the trigger or start button as described in the manual.
  • Check that the blower tube is fully installed and its locking tab is engaged. Some models will not operate if the tube is missing or not seated correctly.
  • Make sure the battery cover, intake cover, or other access panel is closed.
  • Release and re-engage the controls without forcing them.

If a trigger feels loose, sticks, or does not return normally, stop using the blower. A damaged switch or interlock generally requires a replacement part or qualified service.

3. Inspect the air filter and intake

On gas blowers, a dirty air filter can restrict airflow enough to make the engine difficult or impossible to start. Remove the filter as directed and check for dust, oil saturation, tearing, or deformation.

Clean or replace the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not operate with the filter removed unless the manual specifically permits a brief service check. Battery and corded blowers may also have an intake screen or grille that needs to remain clear.

Keep hands, clothing, and loose material away from the intake while the blower is connected to power or has a battery installed.

4. Look for a blocked tube or intake

A packed tube, clogged intake grille, or debris around the fan can prevent a blower from operating correctly and may activate overload protection.

  1. Disconnect the power source: unplug the tool, remove the battery, or disconnect the spark-plug wire.
  2. Remove the blower tube if the manual allows it.
  3. Look through the tube and inspect the intake grille.
  4. Clear leaves and debris with a suitable brush or by hand while wearing gloves.
  5. Do not reach into the fan housing or use a tool that could damage the impeller.
  6. Reinstall every guard and tube before trying the blower again.

If the motor hums but does not turn, or if the fan is jammed, do not repeatedly press the start control. The obstruction or motor may need service.

5. Check for overheating or overload protection

Some blowers shut down after heavy use, a blockage, or restricted airflow. Let the unit cool completely, clear the intake and tube, and try again with the correct power source.

If it starts briefly and stops again, look for:

  • A blocked intake or tube
  • A dirty engine air filter
  • A battery that is overheating or no longer holding charge
  • An extension cord that is too long, undersized, or damaged
  • A motor or control fault

Repeated thermal shutdowns are not normal operation. Continuing to restart the tool can worsen the damage.

6. Gas blower checks after the basic inspection

If a gas blower cranks but does not start, the likely causes include stale fuel, an incorrect choke setting, a flooded engine, a dirty air filter, a fouled spark plug, or a fuel-delivery problem.

Follow the exact starting and clearing-flooded-engine procedure in the owner’s manual. If permitted by the manual, inspect the spark plug for a damaged electrode, heavy deposits, or wet fuel. Replace it with the specified plug type and gap; do not guess based only on appearance.

Do not remove or defeat engine guards, alter the carburetor, or spray starting fluid into the intake unless the manufacturer specifically directs it. Carburetor and fuel-system repairs are best handled by a qualified small-engine technician.

7. When the problem is probably electrical or motor-related

Motor or electrical faults become more likely when:

  • The blower has a known-good battery or power supply but remains completely unresponsive.
  • The outlet and extension cord are confirmed good, yet a corded model will not run.
  • The switch, trigger, or battery contacts are visibly damaged.
  • There is a burning smell, smoke, sparking, unusual noise, or melted plastic.
  • The blower starts only when the cord or battery is moved.
  • A breaker or GFCI trips repeatedly.

Disconnect the tool and arrange manufacturer service or qualified repair. Do not open a battery pack or bypass an interlock. For a low-cost or older blower, replacing the unit may be more practical than paying for motor or control-board repair—especially if replacement batteries or proprietary parts are also expensive or unavailable.

When to replace a part or the blower

A replacement battery, charger, air filter, spark plug, or blower tube can be reasonable when the failed part is clearly identified and readily available for your exact model. Match the model number and required specifications, not just the product’s general appearance.

Consider replacing the blower when the motor or electronic controller has failed, the housing or fan is damaged, safety switches are unavailable, or the repair approaches the cost of a comparable new tool. If the blower is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer before disassembling it.

Quick diagnosis checklist

  • No sound at all: Check the battery, outlet, cord, switch, tube interlock, and overload protection.
  • Motor runs but no air comes out: Check for a blocked tube, intake, or damaged fan.
  • Gas engine cranks but will not fire: Check fuel age and type, choke and primer procedure, air filter, and spark plug.
  • Starts and quickly stops: Check overheating, restricted airflow, fuel delivery, battery condition, and extension-cord suitability.
  • Burning smell, smoke, sparks, or repeated breaker trips: Stop using it and seek qualified service.
